Stephen Jay Gould died of cancer yesterday.

The Harvard evolutionary biologist became famous for his thought-provoking arguments as to the validity of Darwinian theories and evolution in general. He was also known for a series of best-selling books, quite a feat for a culture not steeped in the sciences.
